Corus supplies the solution

07 Nov 2005

Whatever the application, Corus Colors can provide a solution for wall and roof cladding refurbishment through its Colorcoat ranges. Whether creating a striking, contemporary impression or updating an original design, Colorcoat HPS200®, Colorcoat Celestia®  and Colorcoat Prisma® combine high performance with outstanding visual impact.

Colorcoat HPS200 was recently applied to Lincoln House, a three storey office block in St Helens, owned by St Helens Council and accommodating council office staff. The entire façade of the building needed a facelift but the challenge was to retain the architectural style of the original design, including the colour scheme. Colorcoat HPS200  was specified for its versatility and colour availability, which was specified  in Albatross and Merlin for the wall cladding panels. Previously, mosaic tiles had been picked out on the concrete exterior and the Contract and Asset Management Department of St Helens Council in charge of the project were keen to emulate this design concept. The tiles had become unstable and were falling off at the joints, and replacing the rendered concrete with steel wall cladding panels in a complementary colour scheme served not only to improve the appearance of the building but also to provide a more rigid and longer lasting building envelope. “A key consideration in the specification was the availability of the Corus Confidex® Guarantee, which offers up to 30 years protection to the building owners,” comments a spokesman from St Helens. With replacement windows also installed, the 1970s built building has now been brought up to date without losing any of its architectural appeal.

In contrast, Colorcoat Celestia has been applied to the Williams/BMW aftersales facility in Pall Mall, Liverpool. The 2.3-acre site containing a derelict office building and old sugar refinery factory, was completely converted to create the aftersales and administration centre. The existing building front was replaced with floor to ceiling windows and a large canopy installed across the front of the building.

Colorcoat Celestia was specified by architects, Taylor Design to project a modern, forward looking identity consistent with the client’s brand. “We wanted to create a building with a strong aesthetic effect that would meet the corporate requirements of the client in terms of colour, and at the same time, would provide the necessary protection to the steel wall panels,” explains the architect. “Colorcoat Celestia met all the design and performance requirements for the project.”

Colorcoat Celestia in Sirius was applied to the ground, second and third floors of the four storey building, with Colorcoat Celestia in Zeus highlighting the wave profiled panels to the upper floors. With a metallic effect that sparkles, the product offers the creative scope of a highly unusual pre-finished steel, combined with the superior durability and performance consistent with the company’s  pre-finished steel range. The development is now a fitting home to the Williams/BMW group training facility, with an exterior that, through the use of Colorcoat Celestia, adds a visual sophistication.

Although similar in height, the aesthetic demands for each block were completely different. The versatility of the Colorcoat® brand allowed the buildings to retain a distinct identity, with the appearance of the BMW building designed to reflect its high tech function and Lincoln House preserving the 30 year old architectural appeal of its original appearance.
