Corus has over 40 years experience with the Colorcoat® brand, developing and manufacturing pre-finished steel products and services for the construction industry. Through this, we have developed considerable metal envelope expertise and knowledge and one of the ways we make this available to the market is through the Colorcoat Connection® helpline. The FAQs included here reflect some of the most common enquiries relating to Refurbishment we receive.

Refurbishment
Q.Can Colorcoat® products be over-painted?
A.

Yes, pre-finished steel systems can be over-painted. It is important that the correct solution is used and the Colorcoat Connection® helpline is able to recommend specialist proprietary over-paint systems to meet these requirements. Conventional solutions such as masonry paints should not be used as these will give poor adhesion and will not provide long-term performance.

Q.Can pre-finished steel be touched up?
A.

At each inspection it is important to check for any damage to the prefinished steel. Some products, such as Colorcoat HPS200®, will provide a greater robustness. However, if the product has been slightly scuffed, it is better not to retouch it. If it has been scratched more deeply, such as down to the substrate, a repair can be carried out with a suitable touch-up paint solution. It is best practice to keep the applied area as small as possible as touch-up paints are, by necessity, air-drying and could change colour at a different rate from the original factory-applied coating. Contact the Colorcoat Connection® helpline for recommended touch-up paints.

Q.Will over-painting the building affect the Confidex® guarantee?
A.

For the areas which are over-painted, the Confidex guarantee will no longer be applicable. Some over-paint suppliers do offer guarantees and Colorcoat Connection® helpline can provide details of these.

Q.How can I remedy a building with a leaking flat roof?
A.

There are a number of products on the market which could be used to recoat the existing cover. However, a more long-term solution could be to carry out a flat-to-pitched conversion including an insulated roof cladding system with Colorcoat HPS200® external sheet.
