Design, specification and physical properties
Q.I specified Colorcoat HPS200® and leathergrain has been suggested as a substitute. What are the benefits of Colorcoat HPS200 over leathergrain plastisols?
A.

Colorcoat HPS200 combines a unique Galvalloy® substrate and an exclusive advanced coating formulation to give significantly better corrosion protection, particularly at cut edges, and colour retention than generic leathergrain plastisols. This allows Corus to offer the fully comprehensive Confidex® guarantee directly to the end-user, unlike any other pre-finished steel supplier. Colorcoat HPS200 is also maintenance free for up to 30 years and is now available in the most popular metallic shades as well as with the bespoke Repertoire® colour matching service. Look out for the exclusive Scintilla® emboss as a visual identifier of genuine Colorcoat HPS200.

Q.What are the differences between the metallic colours available from Corus in Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra, and in Colorcoat® PVDF?
A.

The metallic of Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra give a far ‘sparklier’ effect than metallic PVDF which is in part a result of their thick topcoat. The topcoat adds to the robustness of Colorcoat Prisma®  and Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra and, coupled with the Galvalloy substrate, allows Corus to offer the full Confidex® Guarantee on Colorcoat Prisma® and Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra. PVDF is generally not guaranteed and is limited to two standard shades. Colorcoat Prisma®  is available in a range of 16 colours designed to reflect current architectural trends, and Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra is available in the two most popular metallic shades.

Q.I want a specific colour on my building – can I get this in Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra?
A.

The Repertoire® service makes Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra available in a virtually unlimited range of colours so that an exact match can be found.

Q.How can I get the nearest RAL or BS colour references for Colorcoat® products?
A.

Most Colorcoat® products are produced in specially developed colours, so are not exact matches to RAL or British Standard references. However, through a thorough understanding of colour referencing systems, Corus is able to give the closest matches for all colours and advise on all aspects of colour-matching. To ensure the closest possible match for ancillary components, it is always best to use actual metal samples available from the Colorcoat Connection® helpline. In addition Repertoire® colour matching service is available for Colorcoat HPS200® Ultra and Colorcoat Prisma®.

Q.What is the Compass® Durability Index?
A.

The durability of a coating system in a given location depends upon its formulation, including pigments. Corus has simplified a complex situation by classifying all Colorcoat HPS200® colours, including those available in Repertoire, through the Compass Durability Index in two groups of colours – CD1 or CD2. A CD1 colour will give slightly better durability than a CD2 colour. The time period identified by the rating is the length of time before a building owner needs to consider whether to re-paint the cladding.

Durability of pre-finished steels in the building envelope
Q.What life-time can I expect from my Colorcoat® building?
A.

With best practice and the appropriate maintenance programme, Colorcoat®  products will last in excess of 60 years. Many factors can affect the overall life and will influence the choice of coating specification. Such factors include location, climate, building purpose, colour, and building design. Corus can provide a clear indication of the durability of all Colorcoat® products.

Q.What effect does an aluminum walkway have in contact with pre-finished steel?
A.

The paint surface of Colorcoat HPS200® will prevent any bi-metallic corrosion. Therefore, placing an aluminium walkway over a Colorcoat HPS200 roof will not cause a problem.

Q.What effect does the use of lead flashings have in contact with pre-finished steel?
A.

Lead flashings will not affect the durability of the product. However, the surface could be stained and there is a small possibility of an electrochemical reaction of zinc when in contact with lead when moisture is present, so care should be taken with cut edges.

Q.What effect does bitumen which has been spilt onto cladding have in contact with pre-finished steel?
A.

Hot bitumen will cool rapidly once it hits the coating, and therefore will not seriously damage it. However, it will detract from the aesthetic appearance of the coating and should be removed if this is a concern.

Q.What effect does the use of stainless steel fasteners have in contact with pre-finished steel?
A.

To prevent bi-metallic corrosion at contact, the fastener should be of a material with at least equivalent corrosion resistance to the the material it is being fastened into/through. Austenitic stainless steel fasteners used to secure pre-finished steel to galvanised steel support sections are considered appropriate.

Q.How can I reduce the effect of edge peel?
A.

The Galvalloy® substrate provides the best available intrinsic protection against premature edge-peel. Edge peel is promoted by water retention in overlaps and can be virtually eliminated on Colorcoat HPS200® roofs by the correct positioning of sealants and design of details.

If there is concern over the corrosive nature of the environment, for example sea-spray or heavy pollution, it is always wise to apply an additional treatment to all cut edges. The likelihood of edge peel is also affected by the original condition of the material adjacent to any cut edge and therefore site-cut edges are usually more prone than factory-cut edges. Again, an additional treatment should be applied to site-cut edges. The Confidex guarantee covers edge peel for the full period to re-paint decision on both Colorcoat Celestia® and HPS200®. Other pre-finished steel manufacturers’ guarantees do not cover this element.

Q.I am starting to see edge peel on an old building – what should I do about it?
A.

The procedure will vary depending upon the situation. If the extent of the edge peel is only superficial, then this is purely an aesthetic issue. If excessive, edge peel could lead to long-term problems and should be rectified. Contact the Colorcoat Connection® helpline for the best advice.

Q.I am designing the building envelope for a swimming pool. What is the best product to use in such a corrosive environment?
A.

It is important to consider the internal environment of the building. The corrosive nature of swimming pool environments should be taken into account and upgrading the internal liner to a more resistant product such as Colorcoat HPS200® is recommended. The build-up of the cladding systems should also be considered, for example providing increased sealing of the liner and installing a vapour control layer.

Guarantees
Q.What is the difference between the Confidex® guarantee and a performance statement?
A.

The Confidex guarantee is fully supported by Corus and provides a legally binding contract with details of the extent of liability and methods of rectification in the event of failure. The term ‘performance statement’ is often used to describe the guidance given in general literature on the estimated life expectancy for a product but does not generally guarantee performance beyond statutory obligations.

Q.What is the Period to Re-paint Decision (PRD)?
A.

Corus performance statements refer to the lifetime of the pre-finished steel sheet in terms of the ‘minimum Period to Re-paint Decision’ or PRD. This is the length of time before the building owner needs to consider whether to re-paint the cladding, either to upgrade the aesthetics or the performance.

Q.Which Colorcoat® products are covered by the Confidex® guarantee?
A.

Colorcoat Celestia®, Colorcoat HPS200® and Colorcoat Prisma® are available with the Confidex guarantee due to the superior performance of the Galvalloy® substrate and the unique paint formulation.

Q.What is the procedure to get a building registered under the Confidex® guarantee, and when should I apply for registration?
A.

To obtain the Confidex guarantee, complete and post the guarantee registration card or register online. Buildings should be registered within three months of handover. For the purpose of registration, ‘handover’ means on substantial completion of the cladding works, excluding minor snagging.

Q.Is the Confidex® guarantee transferable?
A.Yes, it is. Should the ownership of the building change, the Confidex guarantee can be transferred to the new owner. To do this, simply complete a transfer card, which is on the reverse side of the Confidex guarantee certificate, visit the Confidex section of this website or call the Colorcoat Connection® helpline.
Q.Are there any stipulations that edge protection must be used for the Confidex® guarantee to apply?
A.

There is no stipulation under the Confidex guarantee that factory-cut edges need to be protected. However, this is good practice, particularly in coastal environments, and would enhance the performance of the product. All sitecut edges must be treated to give full protection.

Q.Are gutters covered under the Confidex® guarantee?
A.

The Confidex guarantee covers the vast majority of uses of Colorcoat Celestia® Colorcoat HPS200® and Colorcoat Prisma® in roof and wall applications. Due to the variability of conditions, however, we are unable to offer the same comprehensive guarantee for other applications such as gutters and downpipes.

Q.I am creating a penetration through the roof of a building for air handling units. What are the requirements of the Confidex® guarantee for this?
A.

Any work should be undertaken in line with best practice to prevent damage to the cladding. Degradation of the Colorcoat® product commencing at the site cut edge would not be covered. However, undamaged sheets are still covered under the Confidex guarantee.

Q.Is there any stipulation within the Confidex® guarantee for annual maintenance?
A.

Because of its enhanced performance and durability, Colorcoat HPS200 is maintenance-free for the Confidex guarantee period. Over a period of up to 30 years this provides clear benefits in terms of reduced life cycle costs, and has positive implications for safety. Colorcoat Celestia®, Colorcoat HPS200® and Colorcoat Prisma® do not need to be inspected annually to maintain the validity of the Confidex guarantee.
