Cladding System Selector

Cladding System Selector

Alongside the pre-finished steel, selection of the most appropriate roof and wall cladding system will be important in achieving the desired appearance and performance of the building.

When used in conjunction with the Colorcoat Product selector, the Cladding System Selector should provide the building designer with the information needed to specify the building envelope with confidence.

To ensure that the most appropriate system is specified for a given building project, the following areas need to be considered:

  • Building performance – such as fire, thermal, acoustics.
  • Sustainability and life-cycle analysis.
  • In-service cost analysis including guarantees, insurance and maintenance.
  • Appearance and colour.
  • Ease of installation.
  • Detailing – the interface with other elements.

Each of these is covered in the 'Colorcoat Building' manual or on Colorcoat-Online.

Corus and the cladding system manufacturers
The companies featured all have manufacturing operations in the UK or Republic of Ireland and have longstanding relationships with Corus, developed over many years. They are recognised market leaders in the UK and Irish roof and wall cladding sector, very experienced in profiling Colorcoat® products. Together with Corus they provide quality solutions for building envelopes which can ensure the designer a reputable supply chain and confidence in a pre-engineered solution all providing peace of mind.
From concept design to proprietary system selection
The conceptual design of a pre-finished steel clad building will include some considerations of profile and how this affects the appearance and function of the building. The pre-finished steel is fundamental to both the visual appeal and durability of the cladding and as a result Corus would recommend that in the specification process this comes first.
System selection
There are a few questions which need to be answered in order to arrive at a system choice. The first of these is whether the pre-finished steel is to be incorporated into an insulated system or not. If the building is un-insulated, as for many agricultural applications, then a single-skin system is appropriate. In the case of rainscreen systems, the pre-finished steel is used purely as an aesthetic façade and insulation, if present, is dealt with separately.
Profile selection
Once the choice of pre-finished steel and cladding system is made, the next consideration is the profile of the pre-finished steel roof and wall cladding. This will be influenced by requirements for both functional and aesthetic performance, with the latter generally taking precedent when considering walls. The system manufacturers offer many different and unique profiles which demonstrate particular features and attributes and can therefore be categorised by profile shape.
