Un-insulated systems

Un-insulated systems

Often, pre-finished steel cladding is not directly associated with insulation, either where insulation is not required or where it is incorporated elsewhere in the building envelope system. In the former case, a single profiled sheet can simply be used, while an aesthetic finish to a building structure, often used in refurbishment, can be provided by a rainscreen system.

Rainscreen systemsRainscreen systems do not usually provide insulation, but give an aesthetic skin to the building. The panels are back-ventilated and are generally fixed through a clipping action onto two vertically-fixed top hat sections which are in turn fixed to the substructure. Where a rainscreen system is used with multi-storey construction, it is important to include fire stops at the floor levels. Rainscreen panels reduce the ingress of water into the existing façade and allow the direct drainage of rainwater without the use of gaskets whilst giving a fresh, smooth aesthetic.

Single skin systems

There are some instances where insulation is not required and a single skin is adequate. Examples might include some agricultural buildings, buildings heated by their own processes such as foundries or open stadia roofs. In this case, simple profiles are attached directly to either primary or secondary structures. It is particularly important to consider the reverse coating on the sheet as it may be necessary to specify a double-sided product, such as Colorfarm® AP or double-sided Colorcoat HPS200®.
