Tooleys Boatyard and Banbury Museum
Banbury
The new construction at Banbury Museum and Tooleys Boatyard had to combine modern design within a traditional and historic setting.

The works was undertaken on behalf of Cherwell District Council with the aim of creating a leisure and education experience form the history remnants of Banbury’s past. The project involved linking sites on both sides of a canal to form a continuous new centre comprising a museum, a glaze bridge gallery and a tourism information centre. The museum incorporates Tooleys Boatyard, a working boatyard built in the 1700s and a key part of Banbury’s history. Given Tooley’s centuries of boat making experience the planners were keen to incorporate this heritage into new design.
