FAQs

Corus has over 40 years experience with the Colorcoat® brand, developing and manufacturing pre-finished steel products and services for the construction industry. Through this, we have developed considerable metal envelope expertise and knowledge and one of the ways we make this available to the market is through the Colorcoat Connection® helpline. The FAQs included here reflect some of the most common enquiries relating to Site Practice we receive.

Q.What are your recommendations for sealant material?
A.

The primary function of the sealant at the end and side laps of the external sheet is weatherproofing and the elimination of water and contaminants from the overlaps. Sealing of the liner needs to achieve vapour control an air-tightness. Alkoxy neutral curing sealants should be used on Colorcoat® products, the suppliers of which can be recommended through the Colorcoat Connection® helpline.

Q.How do I seal end-laps?
A.

For specific guidance, refer to guidelines from the Metal Cladding Roofing Manufacturers Association (MCRMA) and NFRC and in particular, see the MCRMA Technical paper No.19 (February 2004).

Q.How do I remove dirt and general soiling?
A.

Rainfall alone is often sufficient to keep external surfaces clean. However, soiling which is not removed by rainfall can be removed by washing with a 10% solution of good household or industrial detergent, followed by a thorough rinsing with clean water. Use a soft bristle brush for stubborn deposits.

Q.What is the best way to cut profiled Colorcoat® sheets?
A.
  • If possible, avoid cutting sheets on-site.
  • Cladding sheets should be cut at ground level.
  • A sheet nibbler is the recommended tool for cutting pre-finished steel.
  • Do not use a hacksaw, oxyacetylene torch or abrasive disk since these will damage the coating.
  • For composite panels, careful use of an appropriate saw is necessary.
