Durability
Here we introduce the main factors that can affect the durability of a building envelope and the way in which Corus has used these to design and develop Colorcoat® products over forty years to offer long-term performance and appearance.

Building Components
Whilst the pre-finished steel and cladding system play a vital role in the appearance and performance of a given building, there are a number of components used in this type of construction that also need to be considered and specified correctly.

Regulations
Attention to detail in the specification of any building envelope will pay dividends in the long-term performance of that building. The primary areas of performance are driven through the Building Regulations, so it is important to understand what the Regulations mean and how to achieve compliance.

Functional Design
A key purpose of the building envelope is to enclose the interior of the building and protect it from the elements. The envelope does not, in most cases, provide primary support to the building, however the need for it to withstand the worst of the weather has structural implications for the performance of the cladding.

Detailing
Good detailing is key in reducing/eliminating thermal bridging and air-tightness issues and improve the EPC rating for the building (as well as occupational usage required for DEC's). Here we outline detailing strategies for the major junction points, supported by thermal modelling and accompanied by autocad files.

Site Practice
Having designed and specified the building envelope, it is important to ensure that the integrity of the pre-finished steel cladding system is maintained during its handling and fitting on site. Good site practice should include ensuring a safe working environment, providing the right training and equipment for all operatives, ensuring the cladding system is handled with care and fitted correctly using appropriate ancillary components.

Refurbishment Solutions
There are many situations when it can make more sense to refurbish and upgrade a building rather than demolish it and start again. Pre-finished steel is ideal for refurbishment as a replacement or over-cladding solution or as a base for over-painting if it was used for the original cladding.
